The Scottish Episcopal Church exists as a national and independent church because of its adherence to the Jacobite cause. Had the bishops in 1688 been prepared to transfer their allegiance to William of Orange, it is quite likely that the Episcopal Church would have survived the Revolution as the Church of Scotland.
